Searching more than one airport can uncover different airlines and routes. The useful comparison includes the trip to the airport, not only the flight price.
Widen both ends of the route
Compare nearby departure airports as well as airports near your destination. A different combination can produce a lower fare or a better nonstop route, especially in regions served by several large airports.
Add the ground journey
- Train, bus, taxi, fuel and parking cost
- Travel time at the departure and arrival ends
- Late-night or early-morning transport availability
- Extra hotel nights caused by the flight schedule
- Baggage difficulty on public transport
Check airport codes, not only city names
Cities can have airports far apart, and some airport names include a city they do not closely serve. Confirm the three-letter airport code on every segment before booking and again on the confirmation.
Be careful with airport changes
An itinerary may arrive at one airport and depart from another. This can work when there is enough time and a reliable transfer, but it adds cost and risk. Treat it differently from a normal connection inside one airport.
Decide using the door-to-door total
A nearby airport is a good choice when the combined flight, transfer and time cost is genuinely better for your trip. If the saving is small, the more convenient airport may provide better value.
